Wind and salt: what the bay does to a roof
San Pablo Bay sets the terms for Rodeo roofs. Wind lifts tabs, and moist salt air corrodes the metal that holds everything together. Flashing, drip edge, nail heads and gutter hangers go first, long before a roof looks worn from the street.
We inspect around chimneys, vents and wall joints, then look at nail heads and drip edge. We note rust and ask what the previous crew used for fasteners. A cottage roof that was reroofed over an older layer is a special concern, because the code stops overlays at two layers.

Ask any bidder what the fasteners are made of. Standard nails and thin flashing may hold on an inland roof and rust on one close to the bay, so the estimate should name the nail type, the flashing metal and the drip edge. The same goes for repairs. A patch nailed with the wrong fastener can leak again as it corrodes, and we would rather replace a rusted piece than cover it.
Rodeo roofing and gutter services
- Roof Repair
Salt air and wind attack flashing, nails and sealant first, and a repair there is far cheaper than replacing sound shingles, so metal parts get replaced with corrosion-resistant ones.
- Roof Replacement
Older cottages with worn surfaces or two existing layers need a tear-off and a fastener plan built for bay exposure, and the estimate names the nails, flashing and drip edge.
- Storm Damage Roofing
Gusts off San Pablo Bay lift tabs and ridge caps, and we photograph the damage and write the scope for the claim while the policyholder and insurer handle negotiation.
- Gutters
Salt exposure can corrode gutter hangers and fasteners, so hardware choices belong in the estimate, and a gutter that pulls off the fascia may need new hangers rather than a new run.
- Emergency Roof Repair
A leak in a small cottage can reach the ceiling fast, so temporary protection comes before the full repair, and photographs are taken before anything is moved.
- Roof Flashing Repair
Chimney, vent and wall flashing near the bay rusts and lifts over the years, and replacing it with corrosion-resistant metal is often the most useful single repair on an older cottage.
- Roof Maintenance
A yearly look at nail heads, drip edge and gutter hangers on a bay-side house catches corrosion early, long before rust turns into a leak or a loose edge in the next storm.
A refinery town with a cattle-yard past
Rodeo grew around its refinery, built in 1896 and now run by Phillips 66, and around Patrick Tormey's meatpacking works, where cattle were driven to a bayside dock. Older cottages in a compact town mean ladders, staging and debris disposal need thought, and neighbors are close.

The Rodeo Hotel, the shoreline and low ground by the bay
Rodeo's compact old town includes the Rodeo Hotel that Patrick Tormey funded, and the bay shoreline runs along the old town (Wikipedia). The community covers 4.644 square miles in total, with 0.883 of that water, at an elevation of about 16 feet, so many houses sit low and close to the shore. The closer the house is to the water, the more we focus on metal and fasteners.

Interstate 80 and State Route 4 both serve Rodeo (Wikipedia), and our drive from Alameda comes up I-80. Tell us the street and how close you are to the shoreline when you call.
Gutter hardware near salt water
Gutter hangers and fasteners rust first near the bay. If your gutters pull away from the fascia, the hardware may have corroded rather than the gutter failing. We suggest corrosion-resistant fasteners and list the gutter work as its own line, so the cost of the roof and the cost of the gutters stay separate.
What a visit involves
Your call leads to a scheduled inspection, often with Wayne or Pedro. You receive a written estimate with photos, listing fastener and flashing choices. Rodeo is unincorporated, so permits come from the county; the estimate says who applies.
