Life under heritage oaks
Menlo Park protects its big trees. The Heritage Tree Ordinance, Chapter 13.24 of the city code, covers trees by species and trunk diameter, and a native California oak of 10 inches or more qualifies. Removal or heavy pruning needs a permit. The city says liability can reach tree companies, gardeners and occupants as well as owners.
That matters on a roof job. If an oak limb hangs over your shingles, do not assume it can come down for the tear-off. Plan the tree question before the roof question, and talk to a certified arborist.

Allied Arts, Felton Gables and the shade problem
The streets around the Allied Arts Guild and Felton Gables are established and heavily treed. Shade keeps roofs damp, so moss and leaf litter collect in valleys and behind chimneys, and gutters fill several times a season.
On a repair, we clear the debris and trace the leak from the attic side. On a replacement, we look at ventilation, because a shaded, damp roof benefits from airflow under the deck. If decking is soft at tear-off, you get a change order explained before work continues. Choose materials after you have seen the options in writing.
Roofing services for Menlo Park
- Roof Repair
Oak litter packs valleys and holds moisture against shingles, so a repair starts with clearing and finding the real entry point. Debris cleared from valleys and chimney backs shows where water really entered.
- Roof Replacement
Material choice on a shaded, older home is a real decision, and the estimate lays out what each option involves. On a shaded roof we raise ventilation under the deck, and tear-off shows how sound the decking is.
- Gutters
Acorns, leaves and oak tassels fill gutters repeatedly, and overflow damages fascia and the roof edge. We check slope and hangers too, because a gutter full of wet litter pulls away from the fascia.
- Emergency Roof Repair
A limb through the roof or a fresh leak gets a temporary seal first, with timing subject to crew availability. Give us the street, and say whether a limb is on the roof.
- Storm Damage Roofing
Oak limbs come down in wind and rain, and a heritage tree cannot simply be cut away. We tarp the opening, photograph the damage and write the scope for your insurer, with tree work left to an arborist.
- Roof Maintenance
Under heritage oaks, valleys and gutters fill several times a season. A scheduled clearing visit checks flashing and sealant lines while it is up there, so small leaks do not become decking rot.
Felton Gables, Holbrook-Palmer Park and the railroad edge
Felton Gables is a small pocket of single-family homes bounded by Encinal Avenue, the railroad tracks and Holbrook-Palmer Park, according to a local neighborhood guide. Atherton borders this edge of town, so ask the City of Menlo Park building division which office handles your street before you sign.
A roof beside mature trees needs a yearly clearing visit and a check of the valley metal. The heritage rules above decide what can be done about an overhanging limb, so the tree question comes before the roofing date.
Limbs, storms and claims
Oaks shed limbs in wind and rain. If one lands on the roof, call us for a temporary seal and photograph everything for your insurer. We document the damage, write the scope and can meet the adjuster on site, but only you, your insurer or a licensed public adjuster negotiates the claim. Our tree damage page goes into the steps.

Menlo Park's building division handles permits within the city, and the estimate states who pulls the permit. Atherton, Stanford and East Palo Alto sit beside it, and Redwood City lies to the north. Each is a separate jurisdiction.
