Shaded wood-sided cottages beneath tall redwoods at the foot of Mount Tamalpais in Fairfax

Roofing Contractor in Fairfax, CA

Fairfax is a small town at the head of Ross Valley, bordered on the south by the Marin Municipal Water District watershed on Mount Tamalpais. We reach it from Webster St in Alameda in about 51 minutes (roughly 29 miles), crossing the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge, where backups are common. Streets in the canyons tend to be tight and the trees tall, so the roof questions are about shade, moisture and access more than heat. We cover those up front.

Redwood shade and the moss it feeds

Fairfax sits at the head of Ross Valley, against a watershed (Wikipedia, Fairfax). Tall trees and canyon shade keep roofs wet. Moss builds on shingle edges, lifts tabs and holds water against the roof, and the damage often runs deeper than the surface shows.

We check the shaded slopes first, then the fascia and gutter line. Soft wood at the eaves tells us more than a surface glance. If a slope has years left we say so; if not, we say that too.

Fairfax had 3,470 housing units in the 2020 census, and 35.2% of households rented (Wikipedia, Fairfax). Many roofs here therefore belong to landlords as well as owner-occupants, and a landlord needs a dated photo record and a clear scope more than a sales pitch. The town sits in the valleys of San Anselmo Creek and Fairfax Creek and climbs the hills around them, mostly on Tocaloma soils formed from sandstone and shale, often on slopes steeper than 15 percent. Steep ground adds to ladder placement, staging and debris handling, and we plan for each before the crew arrives.

Narrow streets and small lots

Access can be half the job in a compact canyon town. A ladder, a dumpster and a delivery truck all need room, and we plan where each goes before the day starts.

San Anselmo Creek, Pastori's and the hillside lanes

San Anselmo borders Fairfax to the east and the unincorporated community of Sleepy Hollow lies to the north (Wikipedia, Fairfax). The town's first post office opened in 1910 and it incorporated on March 2, 1931. Pastori's Hotel, once Bird's Nest Glen and later the Marin Town & Country Club, is one of the older landmarks.

To the south lies the Mount Tamalpais watershed, managed by the Marin Municipal Water District. Tall trees, steep lots and creek valleys decide how a roof ages here, and they decide how we plan access. We ask about overhanging limbs and gutter slope before we price a single square.

Wildfire awareness at the watershed edge

The watershed on the south side is a reminder that wildfire is a concern in Marin's wooded towns. We do not guess your fire status: check the CAL FIRE map for your parcel and ask the Town of Fairfax what it requires for a roof assembly.

Zone 2 and the Town of Fairfax

Fairfax is in Climate Zone 2, so a cool-roof product is optional for a single-family reroof. The Town of Fairfax issues permits for homes inside its limits; the estimate names the applicant.

Roof work in Fairfax

  • Roof Repair

Shaded wood-sided cottages hold moisture, so repairs start with moss, soft fascia and failed flashing. We check the lowest courses and the wall where roof and siding meet, since water hides there first.

  • Roof Replacement

Narrow streets shape staging and debris plans, and Zone 2 leaves product color your choice. With 35.2% of households renting, we also give landlords a written scope they can pass to tenants and managers.

  • Gutters

Tall trees overhead fill gutters with needles and leaves through the wet months. On homes tucked into steep hillsides, we make sure downspouts discharge away from the slope instead of undercutting the foundation.

  • Emergency Roof Repair

Phone triage and tarp advice first; arrival depends on crew availability and the bridge. If a limb is on the roof, photograph it and keep clear until you hear back from us.

  • Roof Inspection

A walk of the shaded slopes, fascia line and gutters, with dated photos, shows how much of the damage is surface moss and how much is soft wood underneath, so you decide with the facts.

  • Roof Maintenance

Where redwood shade keeps shingles wet most of the year, scheduled moss removal, gutter clean-outs and a flashing check before the rains can extend the life of a roof that would otherwise age early.

Roofing in Fairfax: common questions

Why do Fairfax roofs grow moss so fast?

Tall trees block sun and keep shingles damp, and moss holds that moisture against the roof. It lifts shingle edges and shortens roof life. We can advise on cleaning and on when a shaded slope needs replacement rather than another cleaning. Trimming overhanging branches is the owner's call and often helps most.

Do you also cover San Anselmo and the rest of Ross Valley?

San Anselmo, Kentfield and Larkspur are on our service list too. The drive from Alameda is about 51 minutes to Fairfax and the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge can delay it. We cannot promise urgent arrival times, and every review on this site is from Alameda.
